Sadeeqa, This is very interesting to me because I did not know this about Chinese culture. I believe that superstition is a negative belief for me to have. I have always heard that if a black cat crosses the road in front of you, that means you will have bad luck. Therefore when I was younger and saw a black cat I purposefully did not go near it. As I have grown older though, I have had many friends with black cats as pets and they have been unaffected. The only issue is wondering how long the supposed superstitious “bad luck” lasts. Superstition though is a lot alike what I believe in, which is karma. This is the belief that if you do good by others, good things will happen for you. Such as if someone loses money out of their pocket, you return it to them. Or if you are in a situation where you have done something wrong and could get away with it, but instead you take responsibility for your mistake and admit to doing wrong, you will be rewarded. The rewards for karma do not necessarily happen automatically, but instead over time. If you believe in karma and by doing the right thing for others and yourself, good things will happen for you in time. Although karma can have a negative side as well, such as if you do bad things, bad things will happen to you. All in all, I believe that superstition and karma are a lot alike in many areas. They both have guidelines that if one attempts to follow, their lives will in turn be rewarded respectively. It is all about one’s personal perspective and how an individual wants to live their life. Great article! On thursday I talked with Chiness girl (Ray) about superstition. chiness people believe alot in superstition. she called China as a country of superstitions. They believe in different things such as, the clock; they don’t dedicate a clock as a gift because they believe that the person who gave them the clock want them to die!!. Also when they want to eat, they don’t put the chopsticks in the rice, but they put it near the rice, beacause they believe that it may bring them bad luck. Moreover they believe in the black cat; if someone saw a black cat it means that something bad will happen to him. Also they believe in ghosts, they believe that they are everywhere so they have to be careful from them.
So what do you think of superstition?
Do you believe in superstition?
